The ability to withstand repeated bending experienced during walking without developing a crack within the estimated life span of the shoe is a very important factor for determining the quality of the sole. Also, the ability of the sole to withstand propagation of any slit formed due to a sharp edge or pointed object during walking is equally important in assessing its quality.

The Ross Flex Tester consists of an arrangement to hold one end of the test specimens in an oscillating grip such that they can be bent through an angle of 900, a motor and gear box arrangement to oscillate the grip at the specified frequency, and adjustable guide rollers to keep the free end of the test specimens pressed down during the bending operation.

The specimen grip has provisions for holding six pairs of test specimens at one time at one of their ends with the help of holding plates and bolts. It is pivoted on two ball bearings to give a smooth low friction movement. The bending is done over a silver steel ground rod of 10 mm diameter located with its axis coinciding with the axis of movement of the grip. The movement of the grip causes the grip causes the test specimens to bend over the rod. This movement is given from a motor and worm gear box through an eccentric and link mechanism. An electromagnetic impulse counter is provided to count the total number of bending cycles.
