It is popularly known in India as Jeera or Zeera. These are very popular throughout the globe and are used for their distinctive aroma. These seeds have a lot of references historically as well. USES:

It is generally fried or roasted before it is used in any dish. Cumin, either in seed form or grounded form is used to add flavor to vegetables and soups. Jeera, one of the main ingredients used in Dal (prepared pulses), gives it a slightly pungent flavor. Paste of cumin is used to treat boils and relieve the symptoms of common cold. It also stimulates the appetite and boosts the ability of the Liver to detoxify the body.
