Opaque Polymer

INTRODUCTION

Opaque polymer consists of a styrene-acrylic copolymer emulsion providing non-pigment hiding of emulsion paints and related system. The emulsion particle is non-film forming spherical bead consisting of a hard Polystyrene/Acrylic shell with a hollow core. Initially, this core is filled with water in the emulsion state and in the wet paint. When Opaque Polymer is incorporated into the water base paint formulation and paint applied to the surface of substrate and allowed to dry, the water diffused out from the core of the micro beads is replaced by air making air void within the bead which serves as an excellent light scattering media.

Opaque Polymer 332 is free of Alkyl phenyl polyoxyethylene ether (APEO) derivative surfactant which is known as a kind of mimic estrogen. Because Opaque Polymer has fine particle size, could be applied to the gloss paint, semi-gloss paint and sheen paint, and show good gloss and hiding.

HIDES AIR VOID

When the PVC of paint is higher than CPVC in water paint, air void is possessed in the dried paint film and this air void increases opacity of the film. Generally, from economic standpoint, paint formulator would like to incorporate as much as air in the paint film as possible, but highly porous paint film has poor integrity, and abrasion resistance and other properties. The SYNTHETIC micro-polymer beads of Opaque Polymer are completely spherical and uniform in nature and the particle size is well controlled compared with other 'Natural' pigments and has encapsulated air void is also well defined. Therefore, incorporation of Opaque Polymer in emulsion paints has the effect of reducing the total surface area of the hiding components. Thus encapsulated air voids in the Opaque Polymer increase the opacity of the paint film and less negative affects the other properties of dried paint film such as resistant properties, scrub resistance etc.

ANTICROWDING EFFECT
Formulation of water based paints with PVC's below critical level contain so much titanium dioxide that the pigment particles tend to become packed or "crowded" together. In case of paints above the CPVC, the formulation contains less TiO2 than low PVC paints. Although crowding may still occur between the pigment components of the emulsion paint, Titanium dioxide has a much smaller particle size than other extenders.(e.g. calcium carbonate, clay etc.). In the dried film, Titanium dioxide particles tend to become crowded together and interfere with each others ability to scatter light and consequently hiding power is greatly reduced.

ANTI DIRT PICK UP
Generally, Low PVC Paints (gloss paint, semi-gloss paint, and sheen paint) have high quantity of binder emulsion in the paint compositions and most of the dried paint film surfaces are consisted of binder emulsion polymer film. Most of binder emulsion is consisted of thermoplastic polymer, and it is common that Tg of polymer is low to be film forming in the ambient temperature. Owing to this reason, dried paint film pick up the dust in polluted atmosphere easily at hot weather. So, the paint film is contaminated. Dirt pick-up property can be reduced by the use the Opaque Polymer in low PVC paints. When the paint is designed by replacing some parts of titanium dioxide in the paint with opaque polymer, PVC in the paint is increased but the change of gloss or sheen is less and dirt pick-up property can be improved
