Oil seals, also known as grease seals or shaft seals are mechanical devices used to prevent the leakage of fluids typically oil or grease from within a rotating or reciprocating mechanism They are commonly employed in various industrial applications automotive engines machinery and hydraulic systems These seals are designed to fit snugly around a shaft forming a barrier that prevents the escape of lubricants while also keeping out contaminants such as dirt dust and moisture Oil seals typically consist of a flexible lip made from materials like rubber or elastomers which makes contact with the shaft creating a seal This lip is usually housed in a metal or rubber case which is pressed into a stationary housing or bore Oil seals play a critical role in maintaining the efficiency, reliability and longevity of mechanical systems by preserving lubrication and protecting vital components from wear and damage
