Sapota is cultivated commercially for its fruit in most parts of India, especially in the central and southern regions, such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka. The varieties included in the present study are selections made in the respective states by farmers and in research stations which were collected from these states as clonally multiplied plants using approach grafting/air-layering techniques. While sapota is grown solely for fruit in India, in other parts of the world, in particular southeast Mexico, Guatemala and British Honduras, it is grown mainly for its latex. The unripe fruits and bark yield white latex, which solidifies on exposure to air, and this forms the base material for making chicle (chewing gum)
