Throw handful of the backfill compound into the pit and then place the earthing electrode in the centre of the pit, so that the electrode rests on the backfill. Refill the empty space with small quantities of the backfill compound along with small quantities of water and stir the pit with a long wooden pole, so as to allow the air bubbles to escape. Continue this process till the entire backfill material is tightly and nicely packed in the pit around the Earthing Electrode. Thereafter again pour water at least 3-4 feet around the electrode. Test the earth resistivity of the Electrode. If found satisfactory connect it with the equipment. If result is not satisfactory, give about a week or ten days time for the Backfill Material to settle. Thereafter check the value and then give connection to the equipment. If the soil is of high resistivity i.e. hard, semi-rocky or rock soil, do not mix the soil with the Backfill Material. Use Backfill Compound only for refilling of the pit along with water as indicated in item (b). Remove the transparent plastic cover from the top to the bottom of the electrode before installing the electrode. Ensure that the connecting terminal is always on the top, above the ground. After connecting the equipment to the electrode apply petroleum jelly on the terminal to safe guard the nuts and bolts against corrosion. Don't: Handle the electrode carefully. Do not drop the electrode. Do not hammer the head the top of the electrode to drive it into the soil. Do not use any kind of driving force to push the electrode into the soil. Do not cut the electrode to suit the depth of the pit. Do not bend the terminal.
