Ce Marking
CE Marking is a symbol affixed on the products, declaring the compliance with EU legal requirement. The letters "CE" are the short form of French Word "Conformit Europene" that literally means "European Conformity". The term firstly used was "EC Mark" and it was officially changed to "CE Marking" in the Directive 93/68/EEC in 1993. "CE Marking" is now used in all European Union legislation.
"CE Mark" is still used informally not officially. For an example, in the Directive 2007/47/ec, of 5 September 2007, amending the directives 90/385/eec, 93/42/eec & 98/8/ec, the term "CE Marking" appears 9 times whereas CE Mark appears nowhere in the entire 35-page document.
CE Marking on products is an official declaration of the manufacturers that products conform to the legal requirements of the applicable European safety, health and environmental protection laws, and other directives. The Directives encompass the "applicable requirements", "performance levels" and "Harmonized Standards" which the products must comply with. Harmonized Standard is the technical specification (European Standards or Harmonization Documents) which are set up by several European standards agencies like CEN, CENELEC, etc.
CEN represents European Committee for Standardization.
- CENELEC represents European Committee for Electro technical Standardization.
- CE Marking added onto a product denotes the declaration of governmental officials that the product may be accredited in the MARKET of their country.
- CE Marking affixed to products assures of the acceptance of the product within the EFTA & European Union Economic Areas, (total 28 countries), and
- CE Marking added to a product allows the withdrawal of the non-complying products through custom, enforcement and vigilance authorities.
