Physical Properties - It is yellow Orange/honey/lemon coloured, transparent to sub- Transparent mineral having resinous to adamantine Lusture, hardness 3 to 3.5 and sp. gr. 4.8 to 4.9. Generally occurs as coating on zinc minerals.

Mode of Occurrence - Greenockite is found associated with sphalerite (Zinc Ore) as coating (about 4-5% in general).

Potential Deposit and Mining Areas - There is no separate deposit of cadmium ore. It is recovered as a by product during refining of zinc from ores.

Uses - Cadmium is used in the manufacture of Ni-Cd storage batteries, coating and electroplating, pigment industries, in plastics and synthetic product, for manufacturing of alloys (cadmium base alloys are used in high speed internal combustion engines). Copper-Cadmium alloys possess high strength, high conductivity and high resistance to abrasion, therefor it is used in electric transmission wires. Cadmium salt are used in photographic rolls, lithography and electroplating. It is also used to control the fissionable element in nuclear reactors and also for manufacturing Cd-Ba stabillizers used to retard the degradation of PVC on exposure to heat and sunlight.
