Duuring processing and use, high shear, heat and oxidation cause degradation of plastics leading to lower strength, poor flexibility, discolouration and diminished aesthetical properties such as gloss and surface consistency. Multi pass polymeric materials are especially susceptible to thermo-oxidative degradation and can affect the molecular weight distribution and gel properties of processed polymers. Antioxidant additives are essential in such processing methods to provide long term stability against thermo-oxidative degradation and to improve service lifetime and quality of the product.

The two broad varieties are Primary Antioxidants of typically a phenol based chemistry corresponding to improved performance of a finished product and Secondary Antioxidants of phosphite or thioester based chemistry used as stabilizers during processing.
