When industry stakeholders meet, problems and issues they face inevitably come to the fore, as was evident at the 'Success in the Global Village: A SME Workshop on Apparel Exports' presented by ICICI Bank Ltd and Apparel Exports Promotion Council at Ahmedabad on August 24, 2007.

Concerns of small and medium enterprises found voice at this Workshop, signifying the state of the industry — at crossroads.

Initiating the proceedings, Amarjeet Kaur, Regional Manager, SEG Marketing, ICICI Bank Limited, Mumbai, said, "Our bank has been particularly serving the apparel and clothing sectors in the best possible way to ensure they compete in international markets."

She added that her bank would facilitate in offering financial solutions through various products on offer.

Chief Guest Amal Dhruv, IIM-A alumni and a visiting faculty, began his speech by aptly questioning the audience, "What has happened to Ahmedabad - the Manchester of the East?"

He opined that Ahmedabad was not "going great" as far as picking up challenges and must "take advantage and start running", thereby driving its enterprises with professional marketing techniques and sound investments.

Offering contemporary solutions, S B Waghulde, Regional Director, Apparel Export Promotion Council, Mumbai and principal of The Apparel Training & Design Centre, Navi Mumbai announced, "We will shortly launch the ATDC at Gandhinagar and an Apparel Park in Ahmedabad."
