Appreciation of the rupee has propelled Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Commerce to send a proposal to P Chidambaram, Finance Minister seeking relief for exports of handicrafts items.

Mr Ramesh emphasizing on the issue suggested that relief for the sector can be brought about by means of cheaper pre-shipment and packaging credit.

The Prime Minister was also informed about the need to cater relief to this key sector since they are not only labour intensive and price competitive but also lack import constituents.

Besides, this sector has also been providing employment to semi-skilled workers.
