India's April-July synthetic rubber production fell about 5.7 percent, but consumption rose 8.2 percent due to higher demand from auto tyre makers, according to the Rubber Board.
Production in the first four months of 2007/08 was 32,748 tonnes compared with 34,739 tonnes a year ago, latest data from the board showed.
Total consumption rose to 93,715 tonnes from 86,600 tonnes in the period, when demand from the automotive tyre sector grew 10.8 percent to 61,870 tonnes.
The share of synthetic rubber in total tyre production had risen to 25 percent in 2006/07 from 22 percent earlier.
Tyre makers account for more than 60 percent of the domestic synthetic rubber consumption and a rise in car sales would spur the demand.
Import of synthetic rubber rose 21 percent to 59,960 tonnes during the first four months of 2007/08. The country imported 172,000 tonnes of synthetic rubber in 2006/07.
Total synthetic rubber stocks stood at 25,405 tonnes at the end of July.
