At a time when buyers in Europe and the US are making a beeline to China and Bangladesh where the pricing is cheaper, the knitwear exporters are trying to give their products a different feel and design to attract buyers.

This is one of the avenues they have explored to overcome the setbacks caused by rupee appreciation. Another avenue is looking for new markets. In the wake of the lull caused by rupee appreciation, the three-day 25th India Knit Fair (Autumn/Winter/Mid-Summer Collection 2008) got under way at Tirupur on Wednesday.

A wholesaler from Spain Rodolfo, who visited the stalls, said that China is efficient and the pricing is also cheaper. Quality wise too China has a cutting edge. He said it is creative designs he looks for in India.

Helene Richman, a buyer from USA, sources mainly from China. The basic items like baby wear are cheaper when compared to India. According to J D Roy of Cleantex Impex, buyers like Helene will get three pieces of baby wear for one dollar in China while one piece in India will cost a little over one dollar.

Helene comes to India only for specialised products like mix-n-match two piece garments. Given the current situation, Durai of Dhanam Knit Garments said instead of looking at a single buyer, they are going in for multiple buyers in countries like South America.

"We're eyeing new markets like Australia which sourced materials from China. But hurdles are there since we have to quote in dollars. We're looking for value-additions like unique designs, embroideries, printing and sequencing. We're also trying to improve on technical fabrics and eco-friendly organic cotton," said A Sakthivel, president of the Tirupur Exporters Association.

"So far we have been very good in fashion garments. Now Bangladesh and China are competing," he added. Sakthivel, however, listed entrepreneurship, timely delivery, quality and designing capacity as among the strengths of the Tirupur knitwear exporters.
