The country exported electronics hardware worth Rs 12,500 crore in 2006-07, up 30 per cent from 2005-06, with North America accounting for more than a quarter of it at Rs 3,410.95 crore.

As per the estimates of Department of Information Technology, 125 countries imported software while 191 countries imported hardware from India in 2006-07. In 2005-06, the electronics hardware export was worth Rs 9,625 crore.

The Working Group on Information Technology for the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-2012) pegs the estimated export of electronics hardware at $5.9 billion by 2010-11.

EU imported electronics hardware to the tune of Rs 3,187.82 crore while shipments to Singapore, Hong Kong and other South Asian countries were worth Rs 2,640.86 crore. It was followed by Japan, Korea and other Far East countries at Rs 710.19 crore.

Middle-East countries imported electronics hardware worth Rs 1,360.46 crore and non-EU countries fetched Rs 70 crore. Australia and other Oceanic countries (Rs 90.51 crore), Africa (Rs 512.42 crore), Latin America (Rs 242.94 crore) and Russia and CIS countries (Rs 274.47 crore).

While North America tops with 27.29 percent of the total exports, EU is second with 25.50 percent followed by South Asian countries at 21.13 percent. Middle-East has 10.88 percent share in the total exports.

Officials said exports to Australia and other Oceanic countries (0.72 percent) and Latin America (1.94 percent) have to increase in the future as they account very less now.

Top items of electronics hardware exports included uninterrupted power supply (UPS), colour TVs, CD recordables, memory cards, picture tubes, medical equipment and optical fibre cables.
