In order to tap the growing demand of the ever-expanding automobile industry and to avoid imports, domestic automotive textiles enterprises must gear up production and supply of automotive textiles such as webbings, airbags, nylon tyre cord, seat covers, headliners, helmets, safety belts and interior carpets.

The number of cars produced in the country is expected to rise from the current 1.3 million units to over 3 million units by 2015. Considering the fact that each car requires around 15-25 kg of textiles, automotive textiles sector is expected to grab a market share of Rs 3,245 crore by the end of the current Five Year Plan.

Automobile textiles, also known as mobiltech, are the textile components used in automobiles as fibres, filaments, yarns and fabrics. Currently, the country has less than a dozen manufacturers of automotive textiles. However, none of them is a major producer.

Industry sources said more manufacturing facilities should be set up to cater to the spiralling demand. They suggested that market players could branch out into automobile textiles as the move could prove profitable.
