Indian Coir industry has a very long and glorious past and it still continues to play a very prominent role in the national economy of the country. Mainly produced in Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Andhra Pradesh, Coir is a natural fiber that is extracted from the husk of coconut and is used for making products such as ropes, floor mats, mattresses, doormats, fishing nets, brushes, rugs, carpets etc. Brown coir processed from ripe coconuts find usage in horticulture, sacking and upholstery padding. One of the leading cottage industries of India, it also provides livelihood to lakhs of craftsmen & artisans in rural India.

During early 1950s, the industry was hit by a serious depression and fortune of the industry only depended on the limited export market. To counteract this problem and encourage the progress of Coir Industry, the Government of India passed the Coir Industry Act of 1953. Coir industry in India has evolved a lot since then and it has come up a long way from manufacturing simple coir ropes to plethora of eye-catching & decorative lifestyle products. The industry has successfully made a comeback owing to the modernization and latest developments in designing & production techniques. From a dissipated traditional industry with households producing miniscule quantities of coir products, Indian Coir Industry has now, established itself as a leader in world export market.

The export of coir and coir products from India during 2011-12 saw a rise of 28 per cent in volume and 30 per cent in value compared to the previous year. In 2011-12, coir exports touched Rs 1,053 crore with a total shipment of 410,854 tonnes as against an export of 321,016 tonnes, valued at Rs 807 crore in the previous financial year. India exports coir and coir products to nearly 80 countries.

Industry experts are of the opinion that the customs duty cut announced in latest FTP, on import of machinery used in coir based industry will enable the sector to reduce the capital expenditure substantially. Mostly, machinery is imported from countries like Austria, Germany and the UK. As the industry is largely labour-intensive, a two per cent interest subvention announced in the policy would also help the sector to a large extent,

Growth in terms of value and quantity was registered in export of Coir Fibre, Coir Rugs & Carpet, Curled Coir and Coir Pith. Other products that are high in demand in the global market are Handloom Mats, Tufted Mat, Handloom Matting, Coir Geo-Textile, Coir Rope, Coir yarn and Rubberised Coir.

Coir products are natural, 100% biodegradable, cost effective and highly sought after in different countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Greece, Spain, Kuwait, U.A.E and Austria. In addition to this, coir & coir products are environment friendly and which makes these more popular and acceptable in Nepal, South Africa, Thailand, West Indies, Bulgaria, South Korea, Netherlands, Yemen, Germany, Nigeria and various other countries.
