In keeping with CII’s vision of sustainable and inclusive growth, Mr. Alok Gupta, Chairman, CII National Committee on Chemicals outlined the committee’s vision as to “To Contribute to sustainable development of India and inclusive growth through use of emerging technologies specifically in the chemical sector" He said that the chemical industry over the next few years has to reposition accordingly.
“India should effectively use its skilled pool of human resources to exploit opportunities in the field of biofuels, water purification and nanotechnology” said Mr Arun Ramanathan, Secretary, Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Government of India.
Speaking at a seminar on Chemical Industry for Global Inclusive Growth, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry, on Monday, Mr Ramanathan said, “Though we have a long way to go, India has registered a commendable progress in the field of chemicals despite various constraints. We have skilled manpower and good R&D setups to go ahead.”
Mr Ramanathan underlined the positive steps taken by the government. He mentioned about tariffs coming down on chemicals over the years.
He suggested active involvement of small players in the new applications of chemicals and specifically nanotechnology.
Considering the demographic pressure, it is important to concentrate on nanotechnology as this field of science can govern the demand of many commodities in a fruitful way.
But Mr Ramanathan also cautioned against the adverse impact of nanoparticles in the process of development of this discipline.
“We should carry out risk analysis of nanoparticles,” he said. Mr Ramanathan also asked all those concerned with this field to pay attention to the issues of governance of nanotechnology. Assuring all possible help, Mr Ramanathan said the CII study on India-US collaboration in emerging chemical industries should add value to the existing analysis.
