TOPIC : Increasing Freight Cost
Posted on 02 July 2007 at 11:21:00

Just recently in a news article, it was mentioned that Srilankan Freight Forwarders Association (SLFFA) has warned exporters in Sri Lanka that they are expecting another freight increase in September which is just after increase of almost US$800 for a 40 foot container within this year. The expected increase is surely going to affect the profitability of the apparel exporters. As per the report the increase is all due to increased Chinese exports to the EU which is asking for extra space in ships.

As an Indian garment exporter the above news item worries me, as we Indiana are already loosing due to depreciating value of US dollor which is the currency we mostly deal in. Can anybody suggest that is this going to affect Indian costs as well & if it does than I am sure many exporters will have to stop exporting & look at options to produce goods for local market only.
