India is committed to the present system of fertiliser subsidy for this year, the prime minister's office said on Wednesday, and will ensure adequate funds are made available.

"The prime minister has said that while the existing subsidy system may have to be reviewed in future, the government was committed to the present system," a statement issued by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's office said.

In May, Singh had said rising fertiliser subsidies were a cause for concern, and had urged planning officials to devise a more cost-effective way of delivering relief.
