The wood fibres used to make soft boards are compressed and heated during the pressing process, giving the boards their distinctive shape. Each has the potential to be either hard or flexible. For the production of wet process fibre boards, the natural lignins in the timber are used as a binding material in the pressing process after the wood has been steamed and reduced to fibres. The ultimate density of the panel determines whether the product is referred to as soft board or hardboard.
