Variable air volume (VAV) system controls temperature by varying the supply air flow rate to each zone. Air flow is varied by modulating dampers at the terminal units, or VAV boxes. Variable volume systems are more energy efficient than constant volume systems, especially when loads vary across zones. Since each zone is supplied with the minimum amount of flow necessary for cooling or ventilation, the total airflow demanded is greatly reduced compared to constant volume systems. Wall mounted thermostats sensing zone temperature, regulate the volume of air allowed to enter the controlled area through the above suspended ceiling mounted variable volume air control boxes.
