Tris has two main functions in eye drops

1. Adjust the pH value of eye drops

Eye drops are one of the most commonly used drug formulations for ophthalmic diseases. For many eye diseases, eye drops have direct and rapid therapeutic effects. Due to the special anatomical and physiological characteristics of eyes, the corresponding requirements for ophthalmic preparations are put forward: the pH value of normal tears is 7.2 ~ 7.4, and the pH value range of normal eyes is 5.0 ~ 9.0. The pH value of eye drops will directly affect the eye irritation and curative effect of drugs. When preparing eye drops, buffers need to be added to adjust the pH value of the solution to make it roughly similar to tears, so as to reduce the eye irritation. 2.As an intermediate of active ingredient.

Tris, as an organic amine, can form double salt which is soluble in water. The most common eye drops containing Tris are ketorolac tromethamine eye drops.
