5. APPLICATION
1) Heating Pads : Sodium acetate, or hot ice, is commonly found in heating pads and hand warmers. Sodium acetate freezes at 54Aca A . But super saturated sodium acetate trihydrate is also very stable, and it easily remains as a liquid at room temperature or below. This is known as super cooling. Small amounts of this sodium acetate are placed inside small pouches containing a metal disc. When the user is in need of warmth, they simply click the metal disc inside the pouch. This releases a few crystals of the sodium acetate. The sodium acetate liquid quickly turns to its solid form. Since sodium acetate freezes at 54Aca A , the solid ice returns to that temperature giving off heat. Many other types of hand warmers use irreversible reactions to produce heat. Sodium acetate heat pads can be used over and over again, simply boiling them will return the solid sodium acetate back to a liquid. This means it is ready to be used again.

2)Industrial Uses : Sodium acetate is also used industrially to neutralize strong acids, such as sulphuric acid, which is used in textile and synthetic rubber production. It is used as a buffering agent in leather tanning to create a more even tan and make the leather more durable. It is also used in the buffering of petroleum products, and used in the production of a range of cosmetic products including soap. It is commonly used in industrial factories because it is very inexpensive and safe to use.

3) Food : Sodium acetate is also safe to use as a food additive. Sodium diacetate, which is sodium acetate and acetic acid in a one to one ratio, is commonly used as a seasoning in salt and vinegar chips in the United States. Sodium acetate is also used to enhance the flavour of some meat and poultry products.

4) Medical Uses : Sodium acetate is used in the medical field to replenish lost electrolytes.

5) Future Uses : Currently, sodium acetate is being studied to see if it could be used effectively for pest control. In the future it may become a component in nematicides. Nematicides are a type of chemical pesticide that are used to kill nematodes, a parasite.
