Silver Iodide By Micron Platers

Widely used in photography, silver iodide (AgI) is a chemical compound which is highly insoluble in water and is a fast ion conductor. It is also used as an antiseptic in medicine. Its structure is similar to that of ice, which allows it to induce freezing (heterogeneous nucleation) in cloud seeding for rainmaking purpose.

The crystalline structure of silver iodide changes with temperature. Some of the phases of these changes are as follows:

* Up to 420K (147 AC), AgI exists in the C -phase, which has a wurtzite structure
* Above 420K (147 AC), AgI undergoes a transition to the Ya-phase, which has a body-centered cubic structure. Its silver ions are distributed randomly between 2-, 3-, and 4-coordinate sites.
* A metastable Ya-phase also exists below 420K, which has a zinc blende structure
