In large water plants, raw water is taken from either a surface water supply or underground aquifer. The water is pumped to central treatment facility. The treated water is then pumped towards the distribution system available in the plants, under external pressure. The distribution system consists of the network of pipes, interconnected with ground levels or reservoirs. After which the water is screened through steel bars, after which the process of pre-sedimentation takes place, allowing sand and silt particles to settle down. And along with that, the pathogenic microorganisms are removed. The final process of sedimentation takes place now. In this process, around 2-4 hours would be given to the water, so that all the particles must be settled down. Next step is the filtration of water, most commonly through anthracite. Now after the process of filtration, the water is now satisfactorily disinfected.
