These alloys when heated at about 500-525 deg C, in contact with cracked ammonia, nascent nitrogen diffuses into surface and forms complex alloy nitrides imparting very high hardness resulting in high wear resistance and corrosion resistance besides anti spalling properties. Alloys containing Al develop hardness up to 1100 HV.
