Clostridium perfringens-induced necrotic enteritis and related subclinical diseases have become economically significant problems for the poultry industry. Necrotic enteritis, an enterotoxemic disease caused by Clostridium perfringens, leads to the development of necrotic lesions in the gut wall, resulting in mortality of poultry. This disease is also multifactorial with complex and partially unknown epidemiology and pathogenesis. Studies have also shown that a healthy chicken has a relatively low number of C. perfringens cells in its gastrointestinal tract, while an increase in the concentration of the bacterium has been correlated with necrotic enteritis.
