The American Concrete Institute (ACI) defines silica fume/microsilica as very fine noncrystalline silica produced in electric arc furnaces as a by-product of the production of elemental silicon or alloys containing silicon (ACI 116R). It is usually a gray colored powder, somewhat similar to portland cement or some fly ashes. Figure1 shows a typical silica fume/microsilica as it appears after being collected from a furnace.
How is Microsilica/Silica fume Produced?
Microsilica/Silica fume is by-product of producing silicon metal or ferrosilicon alloys in smelters using electric arc furnaces. These metals are used in many industrial applications to include aluminum and steel production, computer chip fabrication, and production of silicones, which are widely used in lubricants and sealants. While these are very valuable materials, the by-product microsilica/silica fume is of more importance to the concrete industry.

USAGE
Micro silica in concrete
- Making high-grade concrete (upwards C70) effectively enhances the strength and pumpability of strong concrete.
- Making high seep-resistant, self water-proof concrete, be used in underground, tunnel and the cellar of high- rise structure.
- Used in maritime works and chemical industry. Because of the compact design, it can effectively prevent sulphate and chlorine ion from osmosizing and eroding.. Avoid the steel corroding in armored concrete(RC), and prolong being of the concrete.
- In project item for Iwater conservancy, high speed and bridge, the concrete not only needs basic quota mentioned above, but its wear-resistant quality and abrasion resistance. So adding the micro silica is necessary
