It is generally, first limiting amino acid in the poultry diet. Methionine deficiency leads to retarded growth, decreased egg production, smaller sized eggs, reduced muscle and fat and general weakness due to immunosuppression.
Methionine is a versatile nutrient known to have several distinct biological functions. Specifically, methionine may donate sulfur groups, methyl groups or serve as a building block of proteins. Methionine participates in transmethylation reaction (homocysteine metabolism), a biochemical reaction, where amino acids are metabolized to form energy. Methionine combines with ATP to form S-Adenosyl Methionine. S- Adenosyl Methionine also known as SAMe is a physiological methyl donor involved in enzymatic transmethylation reactions, that is present in all living organisms. After losing methyl group SAMe is converted into SAH (S-Adenosyl Homocysteine), which looses adenosine to form homocysteine. This homocysteine is converted by enzymes like methionine synthase to form methionine, thus completing the cycle.
