Menthol is an organic compound made from corn mint, peppermint, or other mint oils. It is obtained from Mentha Arvensis herb plant.
Properties-
It is a waxy, crystalline substance, clear or white in color, which is solid at room temperature and melts slightly above.
Extraction-
Essential oil of partially dried leaves of Mentha Arvensis was extracted by steam distillation method.
Composition-
It is composed of L-Menthol, 5-Methyl ethyl cyclohexanol.
Uses-
Menthol crystals are used in different pharmaceutical products and cosmetics as antiseptic & inhibitor. It gives minty flavor to various foods products. It is also used in oral products e.g. tooth paste and mouth fresheners due to its physiological cooling effect.
Safety and Precaution-
Despite of its benefit on nasal area, it might cause difficulty in breathing, swallowing, chest hardness, and discomfort at site of application. Avoid undiluted menthol crystal use on skin.
