Leaves of Cymbopogon citratus yield reddish-yellow oil with a strong odor and taste of lemons upon distillation. There is a very high content of citral in the leaves (70-80%). It is used in soaps and medicine. Citral is extensively used in perfumes, cosmetics and toilet soaps and as a food flavoring. It is also the source of the aromatic substances known as ionones, which have many uses. One of the ionones is required in the synthesis of Vitamin A; another is the raw material for synthetic violet.
