Product Overview
Key Features
KOSMOS 29
KOSMOS 29 is the stannous salt of the ethyl-hexanoic acid. It is also known under the name stannous octoate. Stannous octoate and the simultaneously applied tertiary amines are essential for the catalysis in the production of polyurethane foams.

Instructions for Storage
For KOSMOS 29 we guarantee a shelf life of at least 6 months upon delivery under the condition, that it is stored in factory-packed containers and protected against extreme weather conditions, particularly against heat and moisture.
The solidification point of KOSMOS 29 is below 20 C, storage at low temperatures is therefore principally no difficulty.
Application
In the production process of polyether polyurethane foams KOSMOS 29 acts as an efficient catalyst and accelerates mainly the gelling reaction.
Due to interaction with the simultaneously applied amine activator even the blowing reaction is influenced to a certain extent. The optimum dosage therefore depends on the individual formulation and is influenced by such features as the reactivity of the applied polyether, type of the amine activator, type and quantity of the blowing agent and the desired rise time.
Foams with a high percentage of closed cells are indicators of a too strong catalysis of the gelling reaction. Lots of tiny fissures in combination with an exceptionally open cell structure and an absolutely inferior tear strength indicate that the stannous octoate level is too low.
Applied concentrations of 0.17 to 0.4 parts by weight KOSMOS 29 per 100 parts polyol are quite common. Special formulations for low density foams may require up to 0.7 parts by weight KOSMOS 29, especially if methylene chloride is used as an additional blowing agent.
KOSMOS 29 can be dosed separately or as a premix with a small amount of polyol, e.g. at a ratio of 1:10. The latter is done in practice for improving the dosing accuracy. Such premixes should, however, be used up quickly, preferably within the same day.
