Named in honor of Dr. B. Kaplan (German Engineer), Kaplan Turbine is an axial flow reaction turbine. It is appropriate for low head. The power created by the turbine is proportional to QH. As the head (H) decreases, the J discharge (Q) increases to churn out the same power. The present unit consists a scroll casing that houses a runner. Water come into the turbine by the stationary guide vanes and goes through the runner axially. The runner has a hub & airfoil vanes mounted on it. The water is given to the turbine through Centrifugal Pump. The runner is mounted on one end of a central SS shaft, and other end is coupled to a brake arrangement. A transparent acrylic hollow cylinder is fitted in between the draft tube and casing for flow examination. Load is practical to the turbine with the aid of rope brake arrangement, so that the turbine efficiency can be calculated. The unit is complete with control panel. A draft tube is fixed on the turbine outlet. Also, there is a guide mechanism. Pressure and vacuum gauges are fixed at the inlet as well as outlet of the turbine to determine the full supply head on the turbine.
