Azathioprine is metabolized to 6-Mercapto Purine (MP) through reduction by glutathione and other sulphydryl containing compounds and then enzymatically converted into 6-thiouric acid, 6-methyl-MP, and 6-thioguanine (6-TG). Ultimately, azathioprine can incorporate into the replicating DNA and it blocks the de novo pathway of purine synthesis. This action results in the specific action towards lymphocytes due to their lack of a salvage pathway which results in blockade of DNA replication. Consequently, blocking the synthesis of purine also hinders DNA synthesis and thus inhibits the proliferation of T and B cells

Immunobullous disease
Pemphigus vulgaris
Chronic actinic dermatitis (Photodermatoses)
Psoriasis
Eczema
Vitiligo
Atopic Dermatitis
Cautions and Contraindications:
Azathioprine should not be used in pregnant nor should it not be handled by pregnant owners.
Azathioprine should not be used in patients with pre-existing liver disease if possible. (It should be noted that most patients starting azathioprine have been on prednisone.
