It is made from highly pure cotton cellulose through etherification under alkaline conditions without any animal organs, fats, or other bioactive constituents.

MHEC is a white, odorless, and tasteless powder that is hygroscopic and hardly soluble in hot water, acetone and ethanol. When added to cold water, it swells into a colloidal solution, and its solubility is not affected by the pH value. MHEC is similar to methyl cellulose but is more resistant to saline, easily soluble in water, and has a higher gel temperature.
