A squid which belongs to the squid family is the most favourite mollusk among Koreans. It is also called a cephalopod due to the head hidden under ten legs. As it has Chinese ink in the body it is also called 'Mukeo(Chinese ink fich), or it is called
'Ojeokeo'which means a thief preying on crows as well.
Squids are distributed over the wide areas of big oceans such as North Pacific, South Atlantic and South Pacific, including our the East Sea of Korea.
There are 460 species in 30 families related to the kinds of squids, which are distributed over the world's big oceans. Most of the squids caught at home waters of Korea are todarodes pacificus which is usually referred to as squid, loligo vulgaris and sepia esculenta in terms scientific names. Among them the squid occupies the biggest haul.
