Guarana is a climbing plant in the maple family, Sapindaceae, native to the Amazon basin and especially common in Brazil. It is an evergreen vine. Guarana features large leaves and cluster of flowers, and is best known for its fruit, which is about the size of a coffee bean. The fruit looks much like a human eye when ripe.

Active Ingredient: Guaranine and the alkaloids theobromine and theophylline. Guaranine is almost identical in chemical structure to caffeine and has many of the same effects. It is contains about twice the caffeine found in coffee beans (about 2-4.5%coffeine in guarana seeds compared to 1-2% for coffee beans). Guarana also contains tannins, which may account for its traditional use to treat diarrhea.
