Fume Hood were originally manufactured from timber, but now epoxy coated mild steel is the main construction material. Fume Hood (fume cupboards) are generally available in 5 different widths; Fume Hood 1000mm, Fume Hood 1200mm, Fume Hood 1500mm, Fume Hood 1800mm and Fume Hood 2000mm. The depth of Fume Hood varies between 700mm and 900mm, and the height of Fume Hood is between 1900mm and 2700mm. These can accommodate from one to three operators. They are generally set back against the walls and are often fitted with infills above, to cover up the exhaust ductwork. Because of their shape they are generally dim inside, so many have internal lights with vapor-proof covers. The front of Fume Hood is a movable sash, usually in glass, able to move up and down on a counterbalance mechanism. On educational versions, the sides of the unit are often also glass, so that several pupils can gather around a fume hood at once. Low air flow alarm control panels are common, see below

Construction of Fume Hood

Fume Hood is developed to be used as semi closed ventilated enclosures so as to protect the user from harmful and toxic fumes and vapors and to eliminate the possibility of accidental fire, which may be resulted due to the emission of inflammable gases during the course of a given experiment.
