* Water extinguishers: Also known as APW extinguishers (air-pressurized water) these are appropriate for class A fires only and are pressurized with oxygen and filled with water. They should not be used on grease fires, electrical fires or class D fires as they can aggravate the flames and make them bigger. APW extinguishers should be used to control fire only if there is a surety that it contains ordinary combustible materials only
* Dry chemical extinguishers: Available in various types, these are suitable for any combination of class A, B and C fires. These are pressurized with nitrogen and filled with foam or powder. BC types of dry chemical extinguishers contain either sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate. The disadvantage of using this variety is that a mildly corrosive residue is left behind, which may damage the materials and therefore must be cleaned immediately for prevention. ABC types of dry chemical extinguishers are filled with monoammonium phosphate and are multipurpose in nature. The yellow powder(monoammonium phosphate) that is used in extinguisher leaves a sticky residue that may cause damage to electrical appliances like computer among others
