Plate & frame type filter presses have separate plates and Frames. Recessed plate type have raised rim round the edges of its plate so as to form chamber between 2 plates. While in operation, filter cloth hang from each plate, extending beyond the edges. Each plate has centrally located feed hole and there are corresponding holes in the filter cloth, which is fasten leak proof to plate at the centre by clips. When the liquid is pumped into the press, it fills up in chambers and passes through pores of the filter cloth. Solid like dirt clay and crushed seed etc can not pass through small pores and are retained on cloth, resulting in seperation of liquid from solids. Clean liquid is taken out through cock attached to each plate.
