Dolomite or dolomitic limestone is a commonly found mineral of sedimentary rock. It is not formed these days, but can be found in ancient rocks, which leads to a debate over its origin among sedimentologists, also known as "Dolomite Problem". Maybe, due to the significant mineralogical changes, Dolomite is not found on the eartha s surface like sandstones, shales and lime stones.


Calcite/aragonite rich limestones are the original depositions of calcite and/or aragonite that alters to Dolomite after undergoing diagenesis process, which is similar to metamorphism. Environments near tropical oceans are warm magnesium rich ground waters (having significant amount of salinity), which are the best source of dolomite formation.
