A knife-gate valve is a valve that controls your flow by lowering a metal wall (the knife) down across the flow path. The body of a wafer mount knife-gate valve holds a frame that supports your actuator (which is usually a linear cylinder).
The rod of your cylinder is connected to the stem of your valve. As your cylinder extends (pushing the rod out), the knife slides smoothly into place across your flow until it seals against the seat on the far side. When the rod retracts, it pulls the knife back up and out of the path of flow.
A knife-gate valve operates like a guillotine with a sharp edge that slices through your media. This makes it ideal for media with soft suspended solids. They are very common in food and paper industries as they are able to simply cut through any material that is preventing them from closing.
