CMIT and MIT are chemical preservatives, specifically a mixture called CMIT/MIT, with the CAS numbers 26172-55-4 (for CMIT) and 2682-20-4 (for MIT). CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) is an organization that assigns unique identification numbers to chemical substances, and in this case, the two numbers identify CMIT (5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) and MIT (2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one). CMIT/MIT is used as a broad-spectrum biocide in products like cosmetics, paints, and water treatment systems to prevent microbial growth.
