Grasim entered into cement business in 1985 with a capacity of 0.5 million TPA. Over the years, through organic and inorganic expansions, the business has grown multifold. Currently, Grasims subsidiary UltraTech Cement Limited ("UltraTech") has a capacity of 63.15 million TPA. Earlier, in July 2004, Grasim acquired a majority stake and management control in UltraTech.

One of the largest-of-its-kind in the cement sector, this acquisition catapulted Grasim to the top of the league in India. Subsequently, Grasim demerged its cement business into UltraTech in July 2010. The merger has created the largest cement company in India, providing a platform that will help in pursuing aggressive growth going forward.

Grasim's subsidiary UltraTech Cement has 14 integrated plants (including under acquisition), 16 grinding units (including under acquisition), 5 bulk terminals and 97 RMC plants in India. Star Cement, UltraTechs subsidiary, with a capacity of 3 Mn. TPA has operations in UAE, Bahrain and Bangladesh.

All the plants are located close to sizeable limestone mines and are fully automated to ensure consistent quality. All units use state-of-the-art equipment and technology and are certified with ISO 9001 for quality systems and ISO 14001 for environment management systems.

Leveraging the strong equity and goodwill of the house mark, the company has a strong national brand UltraTech Cement under the Aditya Birla Group logo.

UltraTech Cement is the largest producer of white cement and a leading player in ready mix concrete (RMC) in India.

Branded as "Birla White", the white cement division manufactures world-class white cement in a variety of textures and finishes. It has applications in floorings and exterior wall finishes, apart from other innovative uses. The division also manufactures value added products like putty, GRC etc., which are used in wall finishing and various architectural applications.

UltraTech is a voluntary member of the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), which is the apex for the cement industry globally to establish common measures, share best practices and exchange data relating to environmental impact.
