Clavulanic acid is first oral beta lactamases inhibitor. Beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations provide one strategy to overcome beta-lactamase-mediated resistance. Beta-lactamases constitute the major defense mechanism of pathogenic bacteria against beta- lactam antibiotics. Combination of cefixime and clavulanic acid improves the antibacterial activity and resistance to the multi-drug therapy. Based on pharmacokinetic profile also the combination shows synergistic effect.
