Each 1% lead metal in the coating can be safely replaced by approximately 0.25 to 0.35% of Calcium. It stabilizes lead dryers against precipitation in various reactive vehicles and exerts a beneficial solubilizing action on various dryers. Calcium carboxylates, by themselves, have minimal effectiveness as dryers but are very useful when used in combination with active dryers such as Cobalt and Manganese. Calcium dryers help to improve hardness and gloss as well as to reduce skin-formation, silking and blooming. They are also useful as pigment wetting/dispersing agents and loss-of-dry inhibitors. Calcium carboxylates are not recommended for coatings subjected to drying under adverse conditions.
