Calcium Carbide is a strong hygroscopic substance and is decomposed already in the air. Through reaction with the water arises acetylene. Acetylene is an explosive gas. Lower explosion limit is 1.5 % vol., upper explosion limit is 80.5 % vol. Acetylene is a combustible gas with flash point of 305 C, with temperature class T 2. Impurities in carbidic acetylene can show themselves toxic - PH3, H2S. Taking concentration of calcium oxide (16.5%) in concideration, it has toxic effects on the eyes and respiratory tract.
Attention is required before the opening of drum leakage of inerting gas acetylene with nitrogen injected into the holes of the caps Warning during drums decanting boundary carbide is required inerting with nitrogen inlet valve from the continuous flow during decanting.
