It is clay composed mainly of the mineral montmorillonite. It is a product that has resulted from the alteration of basalt and pyroplastic deposit associated with Deccan traps by spigenic changes. Epigenic changes are that occurring at or near the earth's surface due to weathering action of natural agencies such as air, water and ice in conjunction with climatic conditions.

Gimpex is presently operating in Gujarat where both sodium and calcium Bentonite occurs and lies between laterite and basalt belt. If exchangeable CA + + and Mg + + ions are in predominance over exchangeable Na + ions, then it is called calcium Bentonite also known as fuller's Earth. These are non-swelling type. If, however the reverse phenomenon is observed then it is sodium Bentonite. This is basically swelling type. The non-swelling type is easily converted to the swelling type by a chemical treatment.
