Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), also known as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), is an arc welding process that uses an inert gas (either Argon, Helium or gas mixtures) to protect the weld zone from the atmosphere. The heat required for effective welding is provided by an electric arc which is struck between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the job. The power to the arc is supplied by an AC, DC or AC/DC power source having constant current characteristics (drooping characteristics). High frequency voltage is superimposed on the welding current to provide contact-free arc striking and arc stability (especially in AC TIG).
