Q. What is a rapier loom used for?

Answer

The filling yarn in a shuttleless loom like a rapier loom is transported to the opposite side of the loom by means of carriers resembling fingers, hence the name. To transport the filling from one side of the loom to the other, one design features a single, extremely long rapier. Fabric is woven by passing two sets of yarn through a loom at right angles to one other, a process that can be done manually or mechanically. The yarns that run in one direction (the warp) are referred to as such, while the yarns that run in the opposite direction (the weft or filler) are known by their respective names. Most woven fabrics have what are known as selvages, which are completed edges that prevent raveling.
